Grounds

With more than 195 acres of land across six main campuses and centers, MCC has a lot of area to maintain. Each location is unique and includes multiple land types,  from wetlands to historic parade grounds. A sustainable landscape has the opportunity to conserve water, lower the rate and volume of runoff water from rain, snow melt and irrigation, and help reduce the amount of pollutant reaching the surface and ground water.

Grounds and sustainability at MCC looks at how to manage and create spaces that reduce our impact on the environment and creating outdoor spaces for gathering and learning. The goal for the grounds category is based on the AASHE STARS credits, which focuses on land management and support for biodiversity. See the latest MCC STARS report here.

MCC has recently completed an Integrated Pest Management Plan for the Fort campus and is planning on developing two more areas of the Fort campus for pollinator gardens.

2022 Action Plan

MCC is working on the following in 2022 to make progress towards the Grounds goal:

  • Install new pollinator gardens on the Fort campus in the traffic triangle by West road
  • Review the catchment ponds sound of FOC 24 and create a site plan
  • Complete a test run of a biodiversity assessment of an MCC campus
  • Review the 12 acre area at the Elkhorn campus for options to turn it into a native prairie

  • Endangered and vulnerable species (including migratory species) with habitats on land owned or managed by the institution; AND/OR
  • Areas of biodiversity importance on land owned or managed by the institution
