Paramedicine Application and Admissions Process

Metropolitan Community College’s Paramedicine program consists of four classroom sections and three clinical/field components that are simultaneous, plus a capstone quarter. All program components are taken consecutively.

The program provides an introduction to emergency medical care; knowledge of EMS systems; the roles, responsibilities and well-being of the paramedic; medical, legal, and ethical issues; anatomy and physiology; pathophysiology of the normal cell; the respiratory system; general principles of pharmacology IV access and medication administration; airway management and ventilation; therapeutic communication; patient assessment, communication and documentation; and assessment and management of all medical emergencies, pediatric and geriatric emergencies, trauma emergencies, ambulance operations and incident command.

Students must successfully pass each component to enter the next level. After successful completion of the full paramedicine program, students will be prepared to seek licensure.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Submit completed application
  • Evidence of current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS CPR Certification
  • Evidence of current EMT registry credential and current EMT State Licensure

  • Minimum MCC GPA of 2.0
  • Below are the specific technical requirements that must be met and affirmed within the Paramedicine application:
    • Ability to stand, sit, walk, push and squat
    • Ability to lift and/or carry 125 pounds
    • Ability to reach in forward, lateral and overhead motions
    • Ability to climb stairs
    • Ability to distinguish distance, colors, objects and persons
    • Ability to demonstrate depth perception
    • Ability to hear conversation, monitor equipment, perform auscultation, use telephone and distinguish background noise
    • Ability to distinguish sharp/dull and hot/cold
    • Ability to perform fine and gross motor skills with both hands
    • Ability to think clearly and calmly in stressful situations
    • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, using appropriate grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and math skills
    • Ability to work cooperatively with others

Note: Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee program acceptance.

  • Meet with an MCC Health Professions Advisor to discuss career path and course preparation
  • Complete the HSRT-AD entrance exam for Paramedics. HSRT-AD entrance exam and other testing information.
  • Complete and submit the Paramedicine application
  • Submit evidence of current American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Basic Life Support certification
  • Submit evidence of current EMT registry certification (state or national) and current EMT State Licensure
  • Submit copy of current driver's license
  • Request to have official transcript/s from post-secondary schools sent to MCC Registrar's Office (if applicable); documents become property of the college and will not be returned to student, or forwarded to another institution.

Once a student’s application has been reviewed by the MCC Health Professions office, the student will be notified of their admission status by email.

If the student accepts their seat in the program, they must complete the following:

  1. Attend a mandatory orientation, prior to the start of classes - date TBA
  2. Complete and submit the required documents from the emailed orientation packed that accompanied your acceptance notification. (See items below)

Requirements include:

  • Active American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS CPR Certification
  • Proof of Immunizations – required, prior to start of clinicals (varicella, tetanus [within 10 years], MMR, Hepatitis B, annual influenza)
  • COVID-19 vaccine or waiver (medical or religious) *if required by clinical affiliated partners
  • Proof of current Mantoux PPD Skin Testing (must be done annually)

Successful completion of:

  • Health History/Physical Examination Form (current within one year)
  • Background Checks (NE Criminal, NE Abuse, NE Sex and National Sex Offender Registries, Misconduct check/DHHS license lookup)
    • Students under age 19 must have a parental signature on the Background Check forms.
    • If a student's background check indicates a felony and/or open misdeanors - or if the abuse registry check shows a student is placed on a registry, the student will not be able to complete the clinical/field requirement of the course. For this reason, and the possibility that they may not qualify for state registration, a student with a felony will NOT be registered for the program.

The general education courses listed above are Paramedicine graduation requirements. They are not required for acceptance into the program; however, it is highly recommended that they are completed before applying to the program.

Note: To complete the Professional Health Studies-Paramedicine Associate in Applied Science degree (PHSMO), students must take a 6.0 credit hour course of a Natural Science and one Professionalism Life Skills (PLS) course:

  • EXPL 1000 – Exploratory Studies 4.5
  • INFO 1001 – Information Systems and Literacy 4.5
  • HMRL 1010 – Human Relations Skills 4.5

The Paramedicine program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). The EMT course is approved by the Nebraska State Board of EMS.

Schedule changes (such as dropping a course) are the responsibility of the student. The changes must follow College procedures, refund policies and deadlines at all times. Be aware that not all class withdrawals are entitled to a refund based on the census and drop date. Students are responsible for any tuition and fees that are not refunded.
