Medical Assisting Application and Admissions Process

Metropolitan Community College’s Medical Assisting program offers both the Certificate of Achievement and Associate Degree options, designed to give students the knowledge and skills to provide administrative and clinical support to health care employers, including hospitals and physicians’ offices. 

Medical assistants may be called upon to provide clinical assistance in everything from obtaining a patients’ history and assessing vital signs, venipuncture, and assisting with minor surgeries and medical procedures. In addition, medical assistants may be asked to perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, ordering supplies, and training new hires.

Upon completion of the Medical Assisting program, students are eligible to sit for an exam that provides educational credentials and increases earning potential.

Below are the specific technical requirements that must be meet and affirmed within the Medical Assisting application:

  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, push and squat
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 25 pounds
  • Ability to reach in forward, lateral and overhead motions
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to distinguish distance, colors, objects and persons
  • Ability to demonstrate depth perception
  • Ability to hear conversation, monitor equipment, perform auscultation, use telephone and distinguish background noise
  • Ability to distinguish sharp/dull and hot/cold
  • Ability to perform fine and gross motor skills with both hands
  • Ability to think clearly and calmly in stressful situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, using appropriate grammar, spelling and vocabulary
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
Note: Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee program acceptance.

  • Meet with an MCC Health Professions Advisor to discuss career paths and course requirements.
  • Complete and submit online Medical Assisting application.
  • Request to have official transcript/s from post-secondary schools sent to MCC Registrar’s Office (if applicable).

Once a student’s application has been reviewed by the MCC Health Professions office, the student will be notified of their admission status by email to their MCC and personal email addresses.

If the student accepts their seat in the program, they must successfully complete the following:

  • Attend a mandatory orientation, prior to the start of classes - date TBA
  • Complete and submit the required documents from the orientation packet that was emailed with your acceptance notification. Bring completed forms to orientation to hand in.
  • Active American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS CPR Certification
  • Proof of Immunizations – required prior to start of externship (varicella, tetanus [within 10 years], MMR, Hepatitis B, annual influenza)
  • COVID-19 vaccine or waiver (medical or religious) *if required by clinical affiliated partners
  • Proof of Mantoux PPD Skin Testing (must be done annually)
  • Medical/Physical Exam (current within one year)
  • Background Checks (NE Criminal, NE Abuse, IA Abuse, NE Sex and National Sex Offender Registries)
  • Drug Screening
More details on these requirements will be provided at orientation.

Clinical placement requirements are subject to change at the discretion of MCC Health Professions. In the event that a clinical site imposes requirements that exceed MCC Health Professions program requirements the student will be responsible for additional costs.

The general education courses listed above are Medical Assisting graduation requirements. They are not required for acceptance into the program; however, it is highly recommended that they are completed before applying to the program. CPR will be taken during the program.


Note: To complete the Professional Health Studies-Medical Assisting Associate in Applied Science degree (PHSMO), students must take one Professionalism Life Skills (PLS) course:

  • EXPL 1000 – Exploratory Studies 4.5

Schedule changes (such as dropping a course) are the responsibility of the student. The changes must follow College procedures, refund policies and deadlines at all times. Be aware that not all class withdrawals are entitled to a refund based on the census and drop date. Students are responsible for any tuition and fees that are not refunded.
