Single Parent/Homemaker Services

Single Parent/Homemaker Services (SPH) is a TRIO program dedicated to student learning, and fostering self-sufficiency, as well as personal and career development through the implementation of education plans, which take into account the life and career goals of students. 

The program:

  • Provides educational, financial and personal/family needs evaluations
  • Offers educational opportunities and career choices
  • Examines financial aid eligibility and non-traditional careers

Single Parent/Homemaker Services offers:

  • Assistance with securing financial aid
  • Career assessments
  • Tutoring
  • Placement testing
  • Academic and personal counseling; plus
  • Access to the Book Lending Program - loans textbooks to students who demonstrate financial need. To be eligible, students:
    • Must have applied and completed financial aid process
    • Must be a current and active SRS/SPH student participant
    • Must be approved by the SRS/SPH Review Committee
    • Must be enrolled for 4.5 credit hours or more
  • Participation in workshops and conferences - offered throughout the year on topics including résumé writing, interviewing, math anxiety, parenting and budgeting
  • Community resource referrals - advisors and counselors assist in locating other services for students
  • Positive Opportunities for Parenting Solo - an opportunity to foster personal and educational growth through mentoring, networking, community service and lifelong relationships

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be accepted into SSS/TRIO program
  • Be pregnant individuals; or single parents with full or joint custody of their minor children
  • Be homemakers with diminished marketable skills who need to return to the workforce due to divorce, death, or the disability of a spouse
