Driving in Nebraska

Students are required to obtain a Nebraska Driver’s License if they plan to drive in the United States. A Nebraska Driver's License is required to purchase a car and to obtain auto insurance.

Overview

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website outlines the process of obtaining a Nebraska Driver’s License. The steps include a written and driving skills test administered by the DMV. The Nebraska Driver’s Handbook is the best resource to help you prepare for these tests. Samples of written tests are also available online.

Students on Optional Practical Training

Students on OPT who wish to renew their driver’s license are required to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN). Without a SSN, the DMV will not approve of the driver’s license extension. You must also wait until the *start date* on your EAD card to submit your driver’s license application for it to be accepted.

Obtaining a Nebraska Identification Card

A Nebraska driver’s license is the primary form of identification. International students who do not drive may apply for a Nebraska Identification (ID) card. The DMV website offers detailed guidelines on obtaining an ID card.

It is important to be aware that, as nonresidents in the US, International Students are legally required to file a tax return if receiving U.S. income by each tax year deadline. Even if you didn't work or receive income in the U.S., you're still required to file a Form 8843 with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) (US government tax agency).

Since MCC International Student Services cannot give tax advice, Metropolitan Community College has arranged discounted access to Sprintax for International Students. Sprintax will guide you through the tax preparation process, arrange the necessary documents and check if you're due a tax refund.

Sprintax is used by more than 250,000 international students, scholars and nonresidents each year. To register:

  • Visit Sprintax and follow their instructions
  • Complete the online questionnaire
  • Enter the MCC code: 5MCC20F24 in the box on the 'Review your order' page
  • Sprintax will prepare your tax return

Once you complete the preparation process in the Sprintax software, you may need to print, sign and mail your documents to the IRS. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to E-file your Federal tax return. However, this will depend on certain eligibility criteria. If you have a state filing requirement, you must also mail this to state tax authorities.

Finally, do note that you may file your tax forms yourself and opt not to use Sprintax.
