General Education Degree (GED)

MCC Workforce Education offers noncredit instruction to students in the Omaha metro area who are seeking to increase their basic skill level, earn a General Education Degree (GED) or increase their skill in the English-language.

GED instruction and testing are offered free of charge.


About the GED

General Education Development offers noncredit instruction in basic skills and GED test preparation and is available at Fort Omaha Campus, Fremont Area Center, MCC North Express, MCC South Express, Yates Illuminates and at our Applied Technology Center. Individuals are eligible for GED training if:

  • They are 16 years of age or older*
  • Are not enrolled or required to be enrolled in secondary school under State Law; and who are basic skills deficient
  • Do not have a secondary school diploma or its equivalent, and have not achieved an equivalent level of education; or
  • Are English-language learners

*Nebraska Law requires that all sixteen- and seventeen-year-old applicants receive permission from the State office to enroll in adult education programs.

About Noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL)

Noncredit ESL is intended for literacy level non-English speaking students. Classes focus on improving individuals’ reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills in English, understanding the American system of government, individual freedoms, and the responsibilities of citizenship. 

Enrollment-based GED classes for students with a high level of commitment in terms of time, dedication, and discipline. This pathway requires:

  • Attending an Adult Education Information Session
  • Taking an introductory Transitional Learning Community three-week course
  • Completing Nebraska Department of Education paperwork
  • Completing a career pathways interview
  • Completing computer literacy components
  • Taking periodic testing (every three months or 40 instructional hours)
  • Attending class daily

 Open learning GED classes for students needing more flexibility in their learning and who are not able to adhere to strict attendance and testing requirements. This pathway includes:

  • Open enrollment classes for students to participate as their schedules allow
  • Self-paced GED preparation
  • No requirements for attendance or testing

Conversational ESL classes for students who need more flexibility in their learning and who are not able to adhere to strict attendance and testing requirements. This pathway:
  • Allows students to participate as their schedule permits
  • Has no requirements for testing or attendance
  • Welcomes drop-in participants
  • Focuses on practicing oral English skills
